Thrifty Limoncello

Yes, you read the title correctly...

Removing the wax; see,  http://www.thriftyhousehold.co.uk/2011/09/lemons.html

Limoncello is very lovely but very expensive.  Imagine my joy when I discovered a recipe in the Asda freebie magazine...

Here's what I did;

I put 200 ml water & 500g sugar (they said caster, I had granulated- it still worked) in a pan & stirred over a low heat until all the sugar had dissolved.

Then I added the fine peelings from 6 lemons & brought it all to the boil, reduced heat & simmered for 15 mins. The smell at this stage was incredible!

Next, the juice from the 6 bald lemons was added. The syrup was returned to the boil, then simmered for 5 mins.

I left it to cool for 15 mins then added a litre of vodka & transferred to a jar (well 2 jars but I only photographed one).

I will turn/gently shake the jars every day...According to the recipe it will be ready to sample in 2 weeks time, I shall let you know how it tastes!

I think my present giving this year might be Limoncello based!

I have made the James Martin version which looks a very similar recipe. It was absolutely delicious. I gave it in small bottles with a bag of homemade biscotti for dunking in it. I was quite popular that year.

Funnily enough I was looking at limoncello recipes only yesterday. We brought some back from Amalfi several years ago and I squirrelled it away. Then when we eventually opened it up it was off .. I didn't think alcohol ever went off!
Will have to make some then.

What sweet little bald lemons looking a bit like fledglings. That looks as if it might pack a punch for pre-lunch drinks on Christmas day.

I love the picture of the bald lemons. And the lemon scent is practically wafting out of the computer screen! Thanks for the link on removing wax from lemons.

Will be giving this a go! Thank you :D I currently have something similar 'brewing' with orange peel, sugar, rum and wine. Liquid presents all round this year methinks.

PS: I have an orange liqueur recipe that Annie is brewing I think, it is so good to make cheap liqueurs at home!

:-D I think I may have to dash off to the market right now to get some lemons! Do you think this would work well with oranges also?
(I hope you had a fab birthday on the 6th!)
Reading your blog has me saving my pocket change for a trip to the UK!! *sigh*
Have a wonderful week, hopefully with a working fridge.

Oh what a glorious colour! So sunshiny. May well have a go at this at some point, tho perhaps in the NY when it's all grey a dark and we need a bright spot.
