Hellebores

I've been finding the Backlane Notebook Challenge quite difficult at the moment. As interesting plants appear in the garden the 'to-pick-or-not-to-pick' debate starts up in my head. Thankfully the hellebores have now sprung into life...

The Making Winter Blog hop for January is still open to ideas for cosiness & comfort. There are also lots of wonderful photos to be seen over here.

I know just what you mean. I have snowdrops by my front door that I really want to bring inside and have in a vase but every time I think about picking them my heart sinks. Your hellebores are lovely.

Like you I can never decide whether the pleasure will last longer if I leave them outside or be more immediate if I bring them in. I love your little arrangements - just my cup of tea - who needs vast urns full of hothouse stuff eh?! And the way you display them is great too making delightful little vignettes each time.

Your soup and croutons were delicious I made some last night.

Very glad that you liked the soup- it is a real favourite of mine!

Thankfully I've got lots of hellebores out now so don't feel so guilty for bringing this small selection inside.

Those are lovely and perfect in the glass tumbler.

Will they droop? Sarah Raven suggested after picking them immediately sealing the cut stem over a flame for 90 seconds. I'll try it when mine are tall enough to pick.

Yes, they looked very sorry for themselves the next morning. I shall remember your tip for next time though...(Thank you, I'd never heard that before!)

No conflict here in Chicago; the winter relatively mild as it has been gives up nothing. Waiting for the forsythia and hoping our Spring is nt to cold and wet (when it arrives)
Made the lip balm ! Tangerine ! I found it hard to grate the beeswax so used veggie peeler to scrape curls off it. Fantastic..........thanks for sharing.

There's nothing around here that even tempts me to pick it - I'm glad to see you can find something at all!

Your flowers look so pretty. When I picked my first hellebores 2 weeks ago I followed some other advice Sarah Ravens had given of floating the flower heads. They lasted almost a week and I also had the pleasure of looking at the beautiful flowers which aren't easy to see in a vase.

They are so beautiful - I love hellebores. I was eyeing up my Forsythia buds this morning, wondering if they were ready to force yet. February is in sight and I'm ready for Spring.

Hellebores are in my top 3 I think. I love the way their heads droop.

I'm intrigued by Ali's thoughts of forcing forsythia. I wonder how she does that? I have lots in the garden.

Beautiful! I do wish that Hellebores would hold their heads up though.

Such pretty flowers, but you know I love them. I think I will have to pick me some more for week 13 of the challenge!

Yours are doing better than mine! They are still a bit weedy and pathetic at the moment. Which is a shame because they are the only plant flowering in the garden (apart from some confused crocuses that are about to be picked off by the frost tonight, I fear.....).

I wish my hellebores looked like that, I have a feeling my chickens do have a taste for them after all :-( x

They look so lush and almost tropical. What a beautiful wine colour.

I love hellebores and B gave me two for our wedding anne but they are too young to flower yet. Looking forward to next year though.
I think you are doing marvellously for even trying! Well done.
