Grandad's Apron

Grandad's large butcher's apron was found, unexpectedly, amongst some cotton sheets in the airing cupboard. It brought a host of childhood memories whirling back...

I started to wear his apron for cooking. It's large & covers almost everything.

Others started to admire it's significant coverage...

Tracing round it, I've made quite a few replicas.

The latest apron reincarnation

Why do so many aprons have pockets? (Grandad's doesn't) What would you put in an apron pocket? - a dirty spatula? a tin opener? a butter paper?

I have an aparon that shape - actually I have two one in butcher's stripes which I use in the kitchen and one green with sheep all over it that I used to wear for spinning. Both have pockets and I don't think I have ever used the pockets for anything unless it was a hanky. But I notice that Rose Prince in the Saturday Telegraph wears an apron with wooden spoons in the pocket but I am guessing it is not for practical purposes but just for show and that if/when she actually starts cooking she takes them out!

Pot holder or dish towel?

Yes, I like pockets in aprons - they are so easy to sew on also and give a little extra coverage too.
Made your chocolate cake yesterday...delish !
AND you lip balm is the absolute best.

Nice apron. Looks like Marimeko to me ...

No pocket needed, and my apron doesn't have one. ;-)

Thanks Lizzie- am really glad that you like the cake & the balm! (I've just got another marrow so will have to make some more cake & I'm aiming to freeze some this time!)

My apron pocket always has a tissue in it. Why? I am in a room with a perfectly serviceable dustbin? I never thought about how odd it is till now. Now I can't stop thinking about it.

I think "extra coverage" is the best reason given so far...

My most oft-used apron has pockets which have never contained anything except the occasional kleenex. Dish towels get tucked into the belt.

The best aprons are made from tracing other aprons, I think. Especially if the original has cherished family ties. (Apron pun! though unintentional.)

I like that fabric very much.

I am hopeless at even remembering to put my apron on. If I put the odd thing in the pocket, like a tissue, it sits there for weeks while I forget all about it.

Like Gillian, I forget to put an apron on at all, although I have one hanging on the kitchen door!

A hankie and the timer too for when I've wondered off to do something else. Feel very lost without a pocket in my apron!

I too often forget to put an apron on (same with gardening gloves and rubber gloves for washing up). But the fabric in this is so gorgeous and the scale of the apron would be a total comfort. Brilliant idea.

Hankies! And all those little bits and bobs that I pick up round the house like hair toggles and paperclips.

Regarding my piggies, they are a cross between Oxford Sandy & Black, and Gloucester Old Spot. It does make for a very sweet-looking, if naughty, pig!

A handkerchief. My nose often runs when I am trying to concentrate on Delia's recipes!

Every now and again I have a panic as I realise I'm not wearing my wedding ring. Invariably, I find it in the pocket of my apron, where I've stashed it when I've had to knead or roll something. That's the only time I ever use it though!

I like to wear an apron about the house, with a clean one for baking. As women's clothes rarely have pockets these days, I prefer to have a pocket in my apron - for my mobile phone, which is always miles away when someone calls, sand the specs that I can never find when I need them. And for gardening aprons, somewhere to keep my seeds, row markers , cutting knives, and rubber gloves.
